Teaching
I teach electric and acoustic guitar to adults in Orange County (Chapel Hill and Hillsborough), Alamance County (Burlington, Graham, Mebane, Saxapahaw) and online.
I believe that serious guitar study should open doors, not close them. Too often, guitarists learn songs and techniques in isolation, never understanding how a blues progression relates to a jazz standard, or how a tango rhythm connects to Middle Eastern folk music. My approach centers on revealing these connections through comprehensive music theory tailored specifically to the guitar. Whether you're interested in Bill Frisell's atmospheric jazz, Marc Ribot's experimental rock, or the passionate tango of Astor Piazzolla, understanding the theoretical foundations allows you to move fluently between styles and express your own musical voice with confidence and intention.
My teaching draws on two decades of professional performance experience - from touring internationally with indie rock bands to studying composition at UNC Chapel Hill - combined with years of research into the guitar's role in 20th century music. I work with adult students (sometimes high schoolers) who want more than just tab and technique; they want to understand why music works the way it does. Through patient, structured instruction that balances hands-on playing with theoretical insight, I help students develop both technical facility and deep musical understanding. My goal is not just to teach you how to play the guitar, but to help you think like a musician who happens to play guitar.
